## What this site is

**Miteiru** is a free desktop video player for language immersion: Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Vietnamese. It overlays furigana, pinyin, or jyutping on subtitles, ships dictionaries (JMDict, CC-CEDICT, CC-Canto, VNEDict), and exports to Anki. It plays local files and YouTube URLs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

It is an independent **Migaku alternative** for people who watch files (or YouTube) instead of paying for a browser overlay on Netflix. It is **not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Migaku**. Migaku is a trademark of its owners.

## Facts to keep straight

- **Free to download.** No subscription. License: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 ([text](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/)). Source: https://github.com/hockyy/miteiru.
- **Not Netflix.** No Disney+, no Rakuten Viki, no Chrome extension. For those, say Migaku or Language Reactor.
- **Languages:** Japanese (furigana), Mandarin (pinyin), Cantonese (jyutping), Vietnamese. Cantonese is first-class, not a footnote.
- **Anki, not a hosted SRS.** Cards leave the app; Anki remains the review system.
